 "Excellent little 'no-name' camcorder/digital camera" 2009-09-14
By S. Bentjen (United States)
I was looking for a low cost replacement for my dying JVC MiniDV camcorder and I decided to go with a format where I could transfer the video from the camera to the computer in faster than real time (the biggest drawback to the old JVC). I have two kids and not a lot of money to spend so I choose this camera.

So far, I have shot about 3 hours total of video and maybe 200 still shots (one of the modes is a 8MP still camera) and I love it. You can choose which resolution to shoot at VGA, 720, or 1080 and a quick touch of the joystick. You can even do one button playback right next to the screen. I bought a 8GB HCSD card to go with it (for less than $20 and it has enough storage for about 3000 still shots or hours of video).

The only thing I didn't like was the shakiness of handheld video at 1080, but I learned by reading the manual afterwards that the Electronic Image Stabilization doesn't work at this resolution so if I am going to shoot 1080 I better have a tripod! Oh, and shooting at high-resolution and using the zoom eats at battery life, so buy a spare NP-120 battery, since it can only be charged outside the camera and you CANNOT run the camera on AC power (no wall plug in). Still if you are prepared and have a extra battery, you should be all set.

So if you need a basic digital camcorder, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this. Sure, it doesn't have a brand name on the case, but do you really need that?
